Travelling to Turkey means living a memorable experience at each step, as there is nothing boring about the region or the people there. Here are just a few reasons which might convince you to start packing as soon as possible.

Food

The Turkish cuisine consists of a mixture of Middle Eastern, Asian and European influences and brings out the best of the three. But there is more: each region has their secret ingredients and its own kitchen culture so you might as well turn your Eurail or Interray Turkey journey into a pursuit of tasty Turkish food across the country. Some of the most famous dishes are the shawarma, kebab or the delicious baklava. There is also plenty of seafood to choose from.

Hospitality

Turkish people do love to share stories and spend quality time with anyone interested. These are the kind of people who would just approach you in a bus stop to invite you to tea, as you might look tired and could use a refreshment. Don’t be surprised if someone even invites you to sit with them at lunch, as they love to share their delicious food. Take it as an amazing opportunity to learn about the country’s culture from the locals themselves.

Turkish Baths

Going to a Turkish Bath will seem like stepping into a cloud of soap foam and relaxation. Also known as ‘hamams’, these traditional and ancient ottoman bath houses now offer a luxurious experience to those willing to sit back and relax. The scrubbing and the massage will leave you a little bit lighter and carefree. The most popular ones are located in Istanbul, but you will also find great ones sprinkled around the country, as this is a traditional Turkish attraction.

Interrail / Eurail Turkey – what to do, where to go?

With so many different regions and cultural habits, it is hard to pick just a few places to see. Below you can find some popular destinations as well as some that are rather remote. The latter are perfect for trying to live like a local even for a short period of time.

Izmir

This is a perfect destination for those of you who wish to enjoy the sun and bathe in the sea all day long. Situated on the Aegean coast, the gorgeous beaches are waiting for you to go and relax and enjoy the local food. There are 15 cultural and natural gems in Turkey and two of them are in Izmir!

Your Eurail or Interrail Turkey journey will take you to the Multi-Layered Cultural Landscape in Pergamon and to the ancient city of Ephesus, both on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Get ready for a colorful history lesson!

Istanbul

The cutting-edge metropolis is a mixture of ancient history and modern style, with an impressive cultural heritage. This is mainly due to the fact that Istanbul has been the capital city of no less the four grand empires: the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Latin Empire and the Ottoman Empire.

It is almost a must to visit the remarkable landmarks such as the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia or the Grand Bazaar. For a really memorable view over Istanbul and over the world, really, as you will be sailing on the strait that separates Europe from Asia, make sure to go on a Bosphorus cruise, especially close sunset.

Ankara

The Turkish capital city is a vibrant blend of eastern and western culture, which means that you can drink your fancy coffee and have fun in dazzling clubs and then hit the archaeological sites located all over the city. You can even admire all that from above, by climbing the Atakule Tower.

For a proper history lesson, make sure to visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations and see for yourself valuable artifacts from the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras and not only. Another attraction is the well-preserved citadel, dating back to the Byzantine Empire. You will be able to meet local families living there, who are eager to share secret tales of the city.

Cappadocia

This is a backpacker’s paradise, with breathtaking landscape and memorable experiences. Molded by erupting volcanos millions of years ago and shaped by Mother Nature from then on, the landscape is scattered with green valleys, gorges and peculiar rock formations now known as the ‘fairy chimneys’.

Cappadocia is also known for the hot air balloon experiences and this could be your picture perfect over a valley filled with colourful hot air ballons.
The place is also known for the cavern and rock-cut architecture, so make sure you visit the Göreme Open-Air Museum and the subterranean human and nature-built structures.

Bursa

In case you wish to see and taste the authentic Turkish culture, then your next stop on your Interrail or Eurail Turkey journey should be in Bursa. Although less visited by tourists nowadays, the city once represented an important Greek settlement, which grew into an imposing Byzantine city, culminating with becoming the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. The landscape is wonderful as well – you have the mountains on one side of the city and the sea on the other side. What more can you wish for?

Bursa is also the place to experience the traditional life in the Turkish village and the people are incredibly hospitable.

Interrail Turkey FAQ

Whichever Interrail or Eurail Turkey guide you read, there will always be unanswered questions. If you feel that there is anything missing from this guide or the FAQ below, let us know in the comments or send an email!

What to bring on my Interrail Turkey trip?

The official Interrail website lists the following as necessary items to bring with you on your trip:

  • First Aid kit
  • Photocopies of important documents
  • Spare credit card
  • Padlock
  • Torch
  • Driving licence
  • Money belt
  • Universal adaptor
  • Alarm clock
  • Phrase book
  • Small speakers
  • Waterproof jacket / poncho
  • Backpack rain cover
  • Plasters
  • Playing cards
  • Bottle opener
  • Hiking boots
  • Swimming goggles
  • Wet wipes
  • Resealable bags

And of course, you will need a backpack to carry everything – lucky for you, we’ve taken the time to review the best Interrail backpack options out there.

Is it safe?

It is strongly advised not to travel to within 10 km of the border with Syria and to the city of Diyarbakir. In some busy areas, especially Istanbul, the Turkish authorities are stopping members of the public to conduct ID checks. There’s also a larger than usual number of police checkpoints on main roads across Turkey. You should co-operate with officials conducting checks, and keep your passport and a printed copy of your e-visa or your residence permit with you at all times.

In addition, it is always important to take care – try to avoid walking streets alone at night, and keep your valuables somewhere safe. If there’s no safe place at your hotel or hostel, keep them with you!

If you are concerned about something that could go wrong on your trip, we recommend taking a look at World Nomads Travel Insurance – it’s designed especially for travellers rather than typical holidaymakers.
